Dallas Nephrology Associates is proud to announce that Steven R. Hays, MD, FACP, is the 2020 Texas Medical Association (TMA) Young at Heart Award recipient.
Doctors from the TMA Young Physician Section (YPS) announced the award during TMA’s House of Delegates meeting, held virtually last month.
The YPS, a group of TMA physicians under age 40 or in their first eight years of medical practice, chose Dr. Hays for his dedication to helping medical students, and for guiding resident physicians and young physicians to grow as medical leaders within the association. He also inspires them to serve the health needs of Texans in their careers, they said. Residents practice their medical specialty under guidance after graduating from medical school.
“I am humbled upon receiving this revered award,” said Dr. Hays. “My hope is that everyone in the YPS stays involved in medicine, as it is a powerful group with great ideas that is important to the future of medicine.”
Gates B. Colbert, MD, a Dallas nephrologist and immediate past chair of the YPS, said Dr. Hays advocates for increasing residency training positions for students who graduate from Texas medical schools.
“Dr. Hays has a deep caring and passion to keep physicians who train in Texas to stay and serve the community,” said Dr. Colbert.
Dr. Hays serves as a vice councilor on TMA’s Board of Councilors, TMA’s ethical decision-making body. He also serves as an alternate delegate to the Texas Delegation to the American Medical Association and is a past chair of TMA’s Council on Medical Education. He chairs the Dallas County Medical Society’s Legislative Committee.
Dr. Hays has been practicing for 36 years. He received his medical degree at the University of Illinois College of Medicine.
“Dr. Hays has worked with great enthusiasm over the years to advance education for residents and fellows, helping maintain and create opportunities for training programs in Texas, Dr. Colbert said. “He’s also a respected colleague and provides excellent nephrology care to his patients.”
