Dr. Tapan J. Patel Honored by Texas Medical Association for Residency Program Work
Dallas Nephrology Associates congratulates Tapan J. Patel, MD, FACP, FASN, FNKF for receiving the Texas Medical Association J.T. Lamar McNew Award. Dr. Patel was one of 30 physicians nominated for the reward, two of whom were semifinalists. Residents and fellows statewide voted to choose the winner.
The J.T. “Lamar” McNew Award was created in 2002 to recognize and honor Dr. McNew’s dedication to residents and fellows. McNew Award nominees consist of TMA member doctors who have provided outstanding service to the Resident and Fellow Section.
Dr. Patel joined Dallas Nephrology Associates in 2012 and is board certified in Nephrology and Internal Medicine. He currently serves as a Vice President and practices at our Dallas North office. Dr. Patel is the program director for the graduate medical education Internal Medicine residency program at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Dallas.
Dr. Patel was named director of the Texas Health Dallas’ residency program two years ago. He is the first doctor from the Texas Health Dallas program to win the award.
In an interview with the TMA, Dr. Patel said that working with residents keeps him on his toes.
“You don’t teach residents and medical students for recognition,” he told TMA. “But it feels good to be recognized, and I’m glad our residents are so involved in TMA.”
The TMA praised Patel’s leadership and mentorship in the award notification letter stating that he has “shown a strong presence in resident education ranging from encouraging research to resident wellness” and inspires those in the program to become better doctors.
